Friar Gate House, Derby — A History to Call Home
A grand frontage, a garden shaded by mature oak trees and a history woven into the life of Derby: Friar Gate House offers an exceptional setting for its next chapter. This Grade II listed residence combines extensive accommodation across four floors with numerous outdoor spaces and parking for approximately ten cars behind an electric gate.
Standing opposite the end of Vernon Street, the house makes an immediate impression. Its broad red-brick façade, tall sash windows and classical stone entrance reflect the architectural confidence that gives Friar Gate its distinctive character. Ionic columns frame the arrival, while the windows above hint at the scale of the rooms within.
The house’s early history is associated with the Strutt family, whose enterprise helped transform Derbyshire during the Industrial Revolution. Jedediah Strutt established his fortune in textiles before developing mills at Belper and Milford, and the house’s design has been attributed to his son, William, an inventor and pioneering builder. This connection places Friar Gate House within the wider story of the ideas, industry and prosperity that shaped Derby.
By the late nineteenth century, records connect the house with silk manufacturer Douglas Rickard and his family. The Derby School Register also names his son, Edward Douglas, offering a glimpse of the household behind the formal frontage. Later, through its use as Friar Gate House School, the building became part of the childhood memories of generations of pupils. Rooms once associated with domestic life took on a new purpose as places of learning, friendship and discovery.
Today, the entrance hall introduces a home with space for both family life and entertaining. A formal lounge is complemented by further dining and sitting rooms, a games room and a cloakroom, arranged around the central hall and its open staircase. The kitchen and dining area connect with a sitting room, while a further seating area overlooks the rear garden.
The first floor provides six bedrooms and three bathrooms. Above, the second floor includes four further bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and an additional room described previously as a lounge or bedroom, offering considerable flexibility.
The lower ground floor adds a kitchen, lounge, bedroom with en-suite facilities and storage. Its separate entrance from the garden makes this a useful arrangement for visiting family or those seeking a degree of independence within the wider household.
Throughout, high ceilings, tall windows and decorative detailing lend the interiors a sense of occasion. The generous proportions provide room for large gatherings, alongside spaces for quieter moments, working from home or pursuing individual interests.
Beyond the house, the garden introduces another dimension to life here. Mature oak trees give it an established character, with numerous outdoor spaces offering places to sit, dine and enjoy the changing seasons. A swing set provides space for children’s play, while the greenhouse will appeal to those who enjoy growing and tending plants. There is room for the garden to serve different generations and interests, from afternoons outdoors to evenings spent entertaining.
Vehicle access from Mill Street leads through an electric gate to parking for approximately ten cars, a practical complement to the scale of the house and its capacity for welcoming guests.
Recognised through its Grade II listing since 1952, Friar Gate House has accommodated changing lives and purposes while retaining its architectural presence. Its appeal today lies in that combination of history and possibility: substantial living accommodation, a mature garden and the opportunity to make a remarkable Derby house your own.
